National Tax Day in Nepal
National Tax Day is celebrated annually on Mangsir 1 to highlight the importance of taxation in nation-building. This tradition began in 2069 BS (2012) to commemorate the implementation of the Value Added Tax (VAT) in Nepal, which started on Mangsir 1, 2054 BS (November 16, 1997).

According to the Inland Revenue Department, Nepal currently has 1.8 million taxpayers. The government aims to increase this number to 3 million taxpayers within the next five years, reflecting its commitment to expanding the tax base for sustainable economic growth.

The overarching slogan for National Tax Day is: “Tax: The Foundation for a Prosperous Nepal and Happy Nepalis”. For the Sixth National Tax Day in 2074 BS (2017), the slogan was: “Our Effort, Our Tax: The Sustainable Foundation for Nation-Building”.
